William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was a sociologist, socialist, historian, civil rights activist, pan-Africanist, author, writer, and publisher brought up in the United States. Du Bois entered Harvard College as a junior and earned his second bachelor’s degree there in 1890. He became the very first African American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1895. 10. Bernice Johnson Reagon
In the early 1960s, Bernice Johnson Reagon was a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee’s (SNCC) Freedom Singers in the Albany Movement in Georgia. She is a songleader, songwriter, scholar, and social activist. She established the Washington, D.C.-based all-black female a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock in 1973. Reagon and the other SNCC Freedom Singers members saw the ability of group singing to bring various organizations who started cooperating during the 1964 Freedom Summer protests in the South.
